Yoked With Christ?

Yoked With Christ?

Gracevine-816Recently the Lord made Matthew 11:28-30 a special blessing to me. Jesus Christ is inviting those who are weary and heavy laden (loaded down with weights) to come to Him for rest. “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matt. 11:28-30) Jesus is inviting (not demanding) folks to take His yoke upon them. What is Christ saying? A yoke is “a wooden crosspiece that is fastened over the necks of two animals and attached to the plow or cart that they are to pull.” (Google) Jesus Christ is inviting folks to get into His yoke (take my yoke) with Him. Getting into Christ’s yoke implies being submitted to Him, a willingness to work with Him (He carries the heavy end of the load), a willingness to learn from Him (learn of me) and a desire become like Him. What is Christ like? He is meek and lowly. This means that He is “gentle” and “humble”. One commentator gave this explanation: “I (Christ) want you to be gentle and humble like me—willing to be governed.” Are you willing to be governed or do you have your own agenda that is driving everything you do? If your own agenda is driving you, then the chances of you finding rest will be slim, because you will constantly be stressed because of people or situations that are not in step with your agenda. Why not submit yourself to Christ’s agenda? Another commentator said, “rest is not so much what He gives to us as what He is to us; and so He says, not ‘I will give you rest,’ but ‘I will rest you’ [i.e. “I will be your rest”]. Are you harnessed with Christ in His yoke? If not, why not?
