. . . to comprehend . . . what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ. . .

Ephesians 3:18-19

Adoniram Judson

While exploring a graveyard in Plymouth, Mass. recently, I happened upon the grave marker of Adoniram Judson, which said “missionary to Burma, lost at sea.”  “Wow,” I thought, “I didn’t know he died at sea.  I realized to my shame how little I knew about this great missionary.  After returning home I was cleaning off my desk and I came upon a book I had been reading a while back about favorite Bible texts that have changed lives.  I opened it to the place I had marked and lo and behold the next story I was to read was Adoniram Judson!!  Of course I sat right down to read it!  The story of his young life, conversion, and ministry is very interesting to read, and very convicting.  The passage of scripture that compelled him in his life and ministry was Ephesians 3:18-19 which says 18 “. . . to comprehend . . . what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; 19 And to know the love of Christ. . .”   His desire and goal was to know and make known the love of Christ.  It was his passion.  He gave his life for that.  As I think on that, I have to wonder about my own passions and goals, don’t you?
